Day 21) A favourite song with a person’s name in the title
There are quite a few songs that have a name in the title when you start to think about it. I’ve chosen one I’m not sure about whether it’s my favourite but that’s more due to the fact I’m not sure about whether I have a favourite among those songs anyway. I certainly do like this one – lovely melody and some great lyrics in there even if it’s a bit sad. And it makes for some more diversity in my collection here once again.

Day 22) A song that moves you forward
It’s getting a bit deeper now and for me that’s when George Harrison comes into play. I absolutely love this song – what could be more uplifting and moving you forward better than „If you believe in you everything you thought is possible“?

Day 23) A song that you think everybody should listen to
That’s what I meant when I said ‚it’s getting deeper‘. Which song has a message I would like everyone to hear? Again, I’m turning to George Harrison. „It’s not always gonna be this gray“ – we all know that but it sometimes it certainly helps to have someone tell you that. Even better when it comes in such a beautiful song.

Day 24) A song by a band you wish were still together
Easy. Of course, this is never going to happen – for reasons which make the Beatles eligible also for day 25. It can make you rather sad thinking about why they split up, especially considering what amazing music they – as the four of them – were able to create. As much as I love their solo work (or most of it), what they produced as a foursome was on another level. To pick my favourite Beatles‘ song is what picking your favourite among your own children must be like: impossible. I’ve chosen a song which I don’t listen to nearly enough because it’s not on any of their albums and every time I do get to hear it I regret that because this is simply a(nother) wonderful song: Simple but not so simple when you listen closely.

Day 25) A song by an artist no longer living
When most of the music you like is made by people who are older than your own parents and certainly much older than you yourself, there’s a pretty good chance you like a few artists that sadly have died already. So this day wasn’t too easy. As I want this challenge as a whole to be as complete a picture of my taste of music as possible, I needed to have something from Queen in it. We once tried to sing this song with our school choir and it turned out rather horrible. Not because of the song but rather because we didn’t sing it particularly well and the guy who was supposed to accompany us on the piano failed miserably. A much better way to pay tribute to this song is by just listening to the original.

Day 26) A song that makes you want to fall in love
There are so many great love songs out there – how are you supposed to choose one? Well, here’s the one I ended up deciding for. „Only my love holds the other key to me“ – I love that line.

Day 27) A song that breaks your heart
The double McCartney. He’s good at emotions and stuff like that. „Here Today“ has the potential to break my heart each and every time I listen to it properly and closely. If you watch this video till the end you might know why. But as there are bits of the song missing in that video you should also listen to the complete song here. „What about the night we cried/Because there wasn’t any reason left to keep it all inside/Never understood a word/But you were always there with a smile.“ Make of that what you will.

Day 28) A song by an artist with a voice that you love
Goodness – I love many artists‘ voices or else I wouldn’t like their music. But again, for the sake of diversity, I chose an artist that hasn’t featured in this challenge so far.

Day 29) A song that you remember from your childhood
There’s not many songs I can remember hearing in my childhood. But I do remember this one very well. My mother sometimes used to listen to this CD and turn up the volume while cleaning (something I do as well). It certainly took me a while to figure out that the language this group sings in is actually German – well, a special variety of German for that matter. But it’s a good song even if you don’t understand much of what they’re saying.

Day 30) A song that reminds you of yourself
And there’s the triple McCartney. But there’s really only one song that reminds me of myself – and it did so the very first time I heard it. There was a time when I didn’t talk much – at least not outside of my home, away from my family or when I was really comfortable with the people around me. I never used to say anything in school unless prompted to – and I talked twice as much at home. I guess I must have driven my parents and brothers mad sometimes (maybe I still do). So yes, this song certainly depicts me in a way, at least it has done for some part of my life (I would like to believe I’m „better“ now at speaking to other people and in public but that’s for others to judge).

There we are. 30 songs that all have some kind of meaning to me. I have to say, I’m pretty pleased with this collection. It is a rather accurate picture of the kind of music I like even though it is far from a complete representation of the artists I like. A lot of musicians, singers and groups are missing, Michael Jackson, Dire Straits, Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, Michael Bublé, Santana, Simon & Garfunkel to name but a few.
I’ve enjoyed this a lot and I’ve now created a playlist both on YouTube and on Spotify that include all the songs from the challenge. (Please note that in the Spotify list, there’s one song missing because it’s not on there and I’ve had to choose a different version for two other songs as well.)
